Celebrate Caregivers for Their Courageous Acts of Love
May 03, 2024On Veteran’s Day, we celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of men and women who have served in the military. During November, we also celebrate caregivers for their courageous acts of love during National Caregivers Month.
Shortly before Dr. Maya Angelou died, I had the opportunity to hear her speak at a conference. Her statement about courage had a significant impact on me. She said, “Courage is the most important of all virtues.”
She said that we make decisions to be kind, loving, and generous. We can do those things most of the time, but it takes an ongoing commitment to be courageous.
Throughout the history of our country, men and women have been courageous as they have defended our freedom. Sometimes courageous people are recognized and rewarded. When that happens, we should all celebrate their accomplishments and success.
Caregivers rarely receive rewards. However, I can’t think of anything that takes more courage than getting up every morning, knowing that the day ahead will be filled with the unglamorous tasks of tending to the needs of those who cannot care for themselves.
Courage alone won’t do it. It takes commitment and conviction. As we celebrate Veteran’s Day, I salute all men and women who have sacrificed their comfort and safety to ensure our continuing freedom.
I also salute every caregiver who finds the courage to fluff the pillow, wipe the brow, change the Depend, fix the meals, dole out the medication, get the car repaired, pay the bills, shop for groceries, fix the meals, drive to doctors’ appointments, pull up the socks, and whatever else has to be done every single day.
Thought for the Day
"I am grateful that I have the strength of character and the willingness to provide care even when it isn’t easy, fun, or appreciated. I am proud that I continue to find the courage to do what has to be done for my care receiver."
