Caregiver Multi-Tasking

Caregiver Multi-Tasking: The Downside of Doing it All

Nov 14, 2024

Like mothers of small children, caregivers think they have to become adept at doing several things simultaneously. Otherwise, how would you ever get anything done? The problem with caregiver multi-tasking is that you're doing one thing while your mind is occupied with what needs to be done next.

That kind of activity can quickly lead to disorganization and frustration which result in emotional outbursts that are scary to the people around us.

Many years ago, I attended a seminar presented by Jim Rohn, author of the book, “The Art of Successful Living.” He shared many great ideas, most of which I’ve forgotten, except for this one: “Wherever you are—be there.”

He said, “Don't think about work when you’re with your family. When you’re with your family – be with them. When you’re at work, give it all of your attention, and don’t be thinking about your family or other things.”

It’s a simple idea, but it’s been hard for me to implement because I have been a card-carrying compulsive multi-tasker for decades. The problem with caregiver multi-tasking is that when our minds and hands are always busy, it is impossible to be fully present and attentive to the people in our care. As we look at the journey ahead, we must acknowledge that there will be ongoing changes and losses to mourn.

Set aside a little time to connect with your care receiver each day. Turn off the TV, talk during a meal, or engage in another activity you enjoy. It takes effort, but when your caregiving journey does end, rather than regretting the times you lost your cool when you were trying to do too much, you will be able to celebrate the magical moments you shared.

Thought for the Day

"Today, I will calm my mind and my hands and set aside a little time to “be there” with my care receiver."
